How To Start Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? Well to begin with gemstones are extremely beautiful. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many hobbyists love to collect and show case each and every one of the 150 varieties available. Read long as we examine the loose gemstones hobby.

Right at the start you need to read up on the wide variety of stones available. This knowledge will help you to know what you're buying so you buy the right items. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.

Of paramount importance is the color of the gemstone. Top grade gemstones exhibit colors similar in pureness to the spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, Violet or blue. Muted gemstone colors or too dark can lower the value quite easily.

The cut of your gemstone is one of the most important traits when buying a gemstone. The gemstone must be cut in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A poor cut will not reflect light consistently over its entire surface. Color tone, saturation, and hue will always look inconsistent.

The next factor to look at is the stone's clarity. This is talking about the gemstones purity or the absence of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal structure. Without a doubt, zero flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.

Another consideration is the duo of weight and size. Because gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats a ruby of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.

Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gemstones who that are too fragile or too large to be used in jewelry. Look at each loose gemstone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the United States in Arkansas you can find Clear & Smoky Quartz, Diamond and Agate. And in Canada you can find nephrite jade in Mount Ogden, British Columbia or sodalite and rose quartz near Bancroft, Ontario along with iolite from Manitouwadge, Ontario. Think of collecting gemstones as a great hobby and pastime.
