How To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is a term referring to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. A number of people taken up this profession as a passionate hobby. They collect and evaluate loose gemstones or loose diamonds. A number of these hobbyists start to visit various local locations to look for raw gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If you have an interest in this hobby then read along as we discuss the various aspects of gemstone collecting.

The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to know as much as you possibly can about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you know about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You'll know exactly what to buy.

Color is a subjective idea but a very important part in the value of the stone. The closer the color of the gemstone is to its purer spectral value the more valuable the stone becomes. Traditionally, these specter colors are yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange and red. Gemstones colors that are darker or paler than a pure spectral color diminish the value of the stone.

The cut of a gemstonestone is the second most important value determination to consider before buying. The preciseness of the cut is the factor that determines the amount of light the stone will reflect. It will ultimately determine the brilliance of the stone and how much someone will pay for it.

The clarity in a stone is our next factor. Clarity refers to the amount of inclusions (trace elements or large particles of other elements or minerals) that a gem has. The gemstone without flaws is obviously worth more. To see flaws beyond with the eye can see requires a 10X gemstone clarity magnifier or gem microscope. Serious hobbyists will get an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing stamps, coins, beads as well as gems.

Next thing to look at is the duo of weight and size. Because gemstones vary and specific gravity or density. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats a sapphire of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite would be about 1.23 carats.

Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gemstones that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Look at each stone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And in this hobby you don't have to always lay out cash because you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the United States in California you can find Agate, Benitoite, Californite, Diamond, Citrine, Tourmaline, Abalone Pearl, Kunzite, Chrysopras And in Canada you can hunt for nephrite jade in Mount Ogden, British Columbia or pink and dark blueish spinels in Wakefield, Quebec and even black spinel in Burgess and bathhurst Townships in Ontario. Think of gemstone collecting for the great hobby it is.
